Jozef Stefan Institute (JSI) is the biggest research institute in Slovenia for pure and applied research in the natural sciences and technology.

At present the Institute, totalling about 950, has a research staff of about 700: about 200 of them are postgraduates temporarily employed while obtaining their degrees, almost 370 have doctorates and 100 have permanent professorships or temporary teaching assignments at various Slovenian universities. In view of its activities and status, JSI plays a role of a kind of national institute, complementing the role of universities and bridging the gap between science and applications/industry. In 2004, JSI also established an international postgraduate school.

The Laboratory for Open Systems and Networks (E5), one of JSI’s departments, has rich experience in research on information security, computational trust management, user experience evaluation, content delivery platforms, standardisation and dissemination activities. The topics are investigated both from technological and socio-economics point of view. E5 has organized and participated in numerous events aimed at increasing awareness of the technological progress among policy stakeholders, and of the policy and regulatory frameworks among the researchers. Members of the Laboratory have been included in many ICT related standardisation initiatives and procedures. The Laboratory is strongly dedicated and included in all the aspects of the process of digitalization of Slovenia.
