Social media and convergence

The objective of the project is to increase awareness of the latest technological discoveries among key stakeholders in the context of social media and convergence. The dissemination will be based on key areas that impact the convergence of social media. This includes scientific, political, cultural, legal, economic and technical areas, to name but a few.

Social media and convergence

This is particularly essential to provide knowledge support, but also stimulate an appropriate debate among the various stakeholders (the public, the researchers, scientific and other policy makers and regulators) on the desirable future policies and frameworks that are required and lacking in the state of the art concerning media and content convergence. Additionally, the project seeks to provide research on and experience-exchange of policy and regulation strategies. The aim is to support the R&D digital programs by spreading the innovative ideas and also the innovated outcomes in convergence. To achieve this, the project will offer analyses and road maps of related initiatives.

In addition, extensive research on policies and regulatory frameworks in media and content will be developed, integrating crucial topics such as: the types of regulation that are possible, sensible, and currently implemented, joined with contextual analysis of the corresponding issues; court case study on the types of cases that are brought before domestic courts and their implications on fundamental rights, the ways in which domestic courts review interference with fundamental rights in the pursuit of public interests, and the impact of court decisions on national laws and policies concerning social media and convergence; and future trends and recommendations in the policies and regulatory frameworks in media and content convergence. All of the EU countries will be included, although the involvement of additional countries is not excluded.

1. Reasearch agendas and roadmaps

The aim of first Work Package is: To provide analysis and development of research agendas and roadmaps within Convergence and Social Media with the aim to raise awareness about findings and research trends, thus helping to integrate and promote research and its findings within EU and beyond. In addition, we will produce more specific Report on Media Regulators and Convergence within the EU 28 countries. This report will analyse major issues that media regulators face in converging the social media sector, thus helping them to deal more successfully with regulatory challenges.

2. Policies and Regulatory Frameworks

The main objective of this work package is to identify, analyse, make accessible of the national and regional policies and regulatory frameworks and judicial approaches on social media and content convergence and evaluate their alignment with the European ones. The work package is also intended to stimulate debate on the part of stakeholders and the general public and in that way, influence the development of future policies and regulation in the field of interest. The work package thus aims to contribute to the dynamic development of the media and the content convergence sector (social media and convergence) and to offer a better understanding of the regulatory landscape, especially by clarifying the nature of the co- regulatory/self regulatory approaches taken and required, the areas within the media sector where they are and should be applied, their consistency with public interest objectives, their relationship to type of regulation, their impact on the fragmentation of the single market and ultimately, their adequacy and effectiveness in achieving the intended regulatory objectives. In a sense, the project will be a part of the social lubrication of the relationships among the stakeholders in the social media and the content convergence sector.

3. Pre-standardisation initiatives

The aim of this Work Package is: To provide information, analysis and development of pre-standardisation initiatives and stakeholders´ coordination within social media and convergence in order to raise awareness and improve coordination among stakeholders in this area.

4. Stakeholder Seminars

To increase awareness of the latest technological developments among policy stakeholders, making researchers aware of the current and future policy and regulatory framework and monitoring the state of the art of the European Media and Content sector in a digital single market.
