Microsoft and Convergent Media Approach – Ignite Day I – all-in-Immersive-VR event
Today COMPACT joined the event organised by another tech giant who made an important step toward convergent media. Microsoft followed the example of the Facebook Connect VR conference and organised an event entirely all-in-Immersive-VR on March 2nd, using their AltspaceVR platform. Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella’s keynote opened the event and he was joined by Mixed Reality Technical Fellow Alex Kipman for a longer overview of Microsoft’s vision for the future of Mixed Reality. Important guest appearances included people from the creative sector, media and the movie industry especially Titanic’s and Avatar’s director – James Cameron (in the Figure). Mr Cameron highlighted many of the benefits that the XR and VR technologies bring to the next-generation media, movie industry as well as to research and communications. The Titanic’s director concluded that Immersive Technologies create new avenues for content creation and distribution especially in the context of remote performances and operations. Exploration of the physical world through virtual means was mentioned as a natural next step. The speakers stressed on the opportunities brought to artists and content creators to share and to exhibit their works regardless of location and origin with an unparalleled level of presence and expresivity. The event itself was an impressive exhibition of a convergent approach to serious event delivery made as a blend of XR & VR technologies with traditional 2D videos and 3-dimensional dynamic artistic installations and story telling elements.
COMPACT organised an Immersive Technologies Symposium using Microsoft AlspaceVR technology already in Oct 2020.
