Clubhouse and Misinformation over voice?
The new arrival in the social media scene – Clubhouse, iOS-exclusive all-voice app, has been gaining popularity recently. The increased interest is elevated by celebrities and big-tech representatives making apparitions on the platform. The limited availability (only iOS) and invited-only access policy give extra exclusivity to that novel platform. The new communication paradigm where only voice communication is allowed in discussion rooms and no direct posting is available introduced a completely new communication paradigm. The new approach where nothing is recorded and no trace is left of the interactions has many advantages but may introduce some challenges.
According to the recent article by VICE (full article here) the Snapchat-like-style, no-trace-left approach to communication may introduce some serious problems with misinformation. Examples are given where COVID-19 topics are discussed freely with often misleading statements disseminated without judgement or moderation. The author stresses that this may open avenue to misuse and potential challenges that need stronger consideration.
